Community Services

Acutely aware of, sensitive to, and understanding of the needs of the members who are socially and economically challenged and at risk, Community Services is committed and dedicated to increasing the capability and capacity of this First Nation to effectively improving the circumstances, environment and future of it’s people who are in need.

Innovative and highly adaptable, this department has developed and established programs and services unique to the Mikisew Cree First Nation. Additionally, plans are well underway toward other initiatives that will complete the range of community programs and services that will enable the Mikisew Cree First Nation to fully enhance it’s people in the spirit of the Mission Statement.

The programs they administer are as follows:

Social Services: Provides benefits and services for those members who are victims of circumstances beyond their control and to insure they have a quality of lifestyle they are entitled to.

Social Enhancement: A concept developed by and unique to the Mikisew Cree First Nation and that has received recognition by the Federal government, the mandate of Social Enhancement is to motivate and encourage an individual to exercise their self-determination toward self-reliance and to end their dependency on welfare. Benefits are provided to the participant who has an approved self-determination plan leading to self-sufficiency and economic independence.

Family Support Services: Provides programs and services for either the family or the child at risk or in crisis. The primary objective and long range plan of the Family Support Services is the transfer of the governance of Child Welfare from the Alberta province to the Mikisew Cree First Nation.

Elders Program: In addition to providing the Elders of this First Nation with a monthly seniors benefit of $100 to augment their pensions, this program provides a wide range of services to insure the quality of life, security and lifestyle the Elders are entitled to.

Community Services provides brochures and information pamphlets that describe the programs and services to those who are interested.
