Council Committees

The Council portfolio leads are:

  • Youth and Justice – Councillor Philip Tourangeau, Chair, with Councillors Juanita Whitehead and Steve Courtoreille
  • Community Services (Health and Social Enhancement) and Culture – Councillor Steve Courtoreille, Chair, with Councillors Terry Marten and Willie Courtoreille
  • Technical Services (Public Works and Housing) – Councillor Terry Marten, Chair, with Councillors Steve Courtoreille and Russell Kaskamin
  • Economic Development (including corporate affairs) – Councillor Russell Kaskamin, Chair with Councillors Philip Tourangeau and Juanita Whitehead
  • Education, Employment & Training – Councillor Juanita Whitehead, Chair, with Councillors Willie Courtoreille and Philip Tourangeau
  • Finance – Councillor Willie Courtoreille, Chair, with Councillors Russell Kaskamin and Terry Marten
  • Environment, Treaties and Legal Affairs – Chief Roxanne Marcel, Chair, with Councillors Steve Courtoreille, Willie Courtoreille, and Russell Kaskamin
  • Government & Industry Relations – Chief Roxanne Marcel, Chair.  This portfolio is represented by an office located in Fort McMurray, and a staff reporting to the Manager, Melody Lepine.  The organization is funded by contributions from industry, and its mandate is to represent the interests of the Mikisew Cree First Nation in working with industrial development applications.In addition, Council has appointed the following special committees:
  • Governance Committee – established to review and recommend updates to the Custom Election Code and Regulations, which had not been updated since 1996, and to establish a policy manual to guide the operations of Chief and Council.
This committee was created to represent the views of the members both on and off Reserve, and consists of:

  • Chair (to be filled) previously Chaired by former councillor Alice Martin, the Chair has not been reappointed to this committee.
  • Edmonton Representative – Claudia Simpson (who has since relocated to Fort Chipewyan, and will need to be replaced)
  • Fort McMurray Representative – Rita Marten
  • Fort Chipewyan Representative – Robert Grandjambe, and Mary Simpson
